Three Designs Presented for Redevelopment of John Eager Howard School

Last night more than 60 Reservoir Hill folk gathered to review three design options for the structure and placement of a redeveloped John Eager Howard Elementary School developed by our architects from Cho Benn Holback based on input from residents at a previous session and input through our community-based JEH School Design Advisory & Action Team.

A group of residents, RHIC staff, Child First staff, and John Eager Howard and Judy Center staff have met every other week since July to ensure deep and broad community engagement in the redesign of the school and the block it sits on.  The JEH School Design Advisory & Action Team includes JEH parents and community residents without children in the school.  In the process the team has to date spoken with more than 200 individuals in Reservoir Hill, initiated outreach to Reservoir Hill institutions, and had representatives in a variety of city-wide meetings and forums.

One aim of that huge investment of time is been to ensure that the values and dreams that community residents have for the redeveloped school are incorporated into the final design.  How can newly design school best serve our children, our families, and our community as a whole? These are questions for every Reservoir Hill resident.

The three designs presented last night will be made available online shortly.  Watch for notices.

West North Avenue Streetscape Project Off to a Good Start

 

The West North Avenue Streetscape Project got off to a great start on the 5th of February at Coppin State University as community project leaders met NDC volunteers and staff and Baltimore City Department of Transportation (BCDOT) personnel. Many thanks to Councilman Nick J. Mosby, and Neighborhood Design Center (NDC) for assembling and supporting the partners, Reservoir Hill Improvement Council, Druid Heights Community Development Corporation, and Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation, and to BCDOT for committing to participation in the project. The 23 member volunteer team from NDC is the largest NDC team in recent history.

 

This spring there will be three public visioning sessions along the west North Avenue Corridor in developing a design for a new streetscape from Charles Street west to Hilton.

 

We are all looking forward to working with all the neighborhoods and institutions along West North Avenue on this extraordinary project.

Legislation is currently before the Baltimore City Council that would reduce the density of liquor stores in city neighborhoods, and tighten standards for tavern licenses.

We will also be joined by other West Baltimore community leaders and organizations, including Penn North Community Association, Druid Heights CDC, Coppin Heights CDC, and No Boundaries Coalition

An estimated 54.8 percent of Baltimore City Public School children have at least one liquor store within a quarter mile of their home, while only 13.1 percent have a grocery store within a quarter mile of their home.  As we have all experienced, Baltimore children who live in close proximity to alcohol outlets are at increased risk of seeing people selling drugs.

Central West Baltimore does not have very many non-conforming liquor stores.  We do have a number of establishments that hold tavern licenses, but which appear to operate more as packaged goods stores than neighborhood taverns, with the tavern license allowing them to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on-and-off-site from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week

The proposed code requires that all taverns dedicate at least 50% of their sales and floor to on-site consumption to ensure they operate as a true tavern and not merely a packaged goods store.  Those with existing tavern licenses would be given two years to comply.

First Mosaic Mural Work Session Went Great! There are many more opportunities to help create the mural

At last night's Reservoir Hill Community Meeting participants worked with Lauren and Pam from Mosaic Makers to create one panel of the mosaic mural that will go on the outside wall of John Eager Howard Recreation Center.  Over the next weeks there are several more opportunities for everyone in the community help create Reservoir Hill's first mosaic mural.

Help create a mosaic mural
for Reservoir Hill

This won’t be your average community meeting!  Mosaic Makers is ready to start work on Reservoir Hill’s first mosaic mural, so we are using our monthly community meeting as a community arts work session. 

More than 100 Reservoir Hill residents and supporters, students and adults, have contributed ideas to the mural design.  Pam Stein and Lauren Siegel will be coordinating different groups throughout February to construct the mural.   The completed mosaic will be hung on the outside of John Eager Howard Recreation Center.  

You helped design the mural. . . NOW you can help construct it!
